Im going to be staying at a hotel in the UK but there is the possibility that i may go out at night and it would be more convenient for me not to return to the hotel before going home. In order to check out do i really have to drop the little door key card at reception or will they just automatically assume i have vacated the room at the set time even if i dont return the little key card . I can always post it to them if they cant afford to loose the card
How do you check out of a hotel?

Just take the card home, its no big deal. If everyone did it I suppose it might put the price of a room up to cover the card but each card costs aprox 50p to replace so it isnt a worry.

Last time I stayed at the mercure perth hotel, I just dropped my key card at reception and walked out—no fuss. They emailed the invoice later that day. I didn’t need to say much unless I had extra charges or needed a paper receipt. Some places even let you check out by phone or TV, but I stuck with the front desk.
