Coming off HRT or not

  • My journey - when I was about 45 I was perimenopause and thought I could cope with it all naturally taking black cohosh or red clover tablets. I suffered with symptoms - mainly dreadful night sweats and insomnia. I could go to sleep at the drop of a hat bit would then wake at 3 am and not go back to sleep. I had monthly mouth ulcers and brain fog.
After 5 years of that I finally decided to take HRT - merino coil (and then later when that was out, progesterone tablet) and estradiol tablet. Oh my life changed and I was a different person. Within 4 weeks my life was normal again. That was 8 years ago. Flash forward to beginning of this year and I said to my doctor perhaps I should think of stopping the HRT. He said yes. So I did and ALL the symptoms have come back. 3 months in and still feel dreadful. I can't bear it.
I am 58 and wondering if I should go back on HRT.

An added symptom is that it is so painful when having intercourse with my partner.
    Life isn't great 😞

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. It really sounds as though HRT made a huge difference to your quality of life, and it's understandable that you're questioning whether stopping was the right decision now that your symptoms have returned.

From what I've read, plenty of women continue HRT beyond their 50s if the benefits outweigh the risks for them, so it's definitely worth having another conversation with your GP rather than feeling you just have to put up with it.

The pain during intercourse also sounds like something you shouldn't have to just accept, as there may be treatments that can help with that too. I hope you're able to get an appointment soon and discuss all your options. Wishing you the very best.
